Portraits of a man and his wife, oil on wooden panel, unsigned. The portraits have been identified as being painted by Ralph Curtis, (1808-1885), previously known as the “Long Neck Artist”. The paintings attributed to Curtis are all portraits and, with one exception, are painted on hand-hewn wooden panels. Most, like this pair, are unframed. Curtis was most active in New York State, where he was born and, later in his life, in the Midwest.
These portraits are in overall good condition, having been professionally conserved. There is minor scattered in-painting, mostly to the edges, and the woman has a little in-painting on her face along with an age crack on the bottom left. Circa 1830.
