Portraits of a Man and Wife - Ammi Phillips

ON LAYAWAY

Portraits of a man and wife by Ammi Phillips, (1788-1865). The man is wearing a black jacket, white pleated shirt and a black stock with a large bow. He is holding a pamphlet entitled, “Minutes of the Baptist Missionary Convention”. His wife is wearing a multilayer embroidered and pleated bonnet with long ribbons, and a black dress with ballooned sleeves and a wide embroidered organdy collar. The paintings are both in good condition, unlined, with craquelure, stretcher marks and scattered areas of inpainting. They are presented in matching period gilt wood frames. Painted during Phillips’ “Kent Limner” period, the paintings date from circa 1829-1840, Kent, CT or Dover Plains, NY.

Pair of Brace-Back Windsor Chairs

Pair of brace-back Windsor chairs. These chairs have nine spindles, nicely shaped saddle seats, attractive bulbous turnings and old green paint. They are in good condition, sturdy, but one chair has two tight cracks in the seat. 18th century, New England.

17th Century Mirror

17th Century mirror. The mirror sports a faux grain painted frame and an elaborately pierced crest with leafy openwork and three globes. It is in excellent condition, but the mirror has been replaced. Late 17th century, Continental, probably Dutch.

Civil War Soldier Whirligig

Carved Civil War soldier whirligig. The carving includes the soldier’s cap, knapsack and facial details. The whirligig has had a rough life, missing one arm, both feet and both paddles and with significant paint wear. Nevertheless, it remains a very interesting piece of folk art with great sculptural quality. The metal stand is contemporary. 19th century, American.

Canted Step-Back Cupboard

An outstanding Federal step-back cupboard, poplar. The upper section of this two-part cupboard is attractively canted and sports a strong molded cornice, fluted quarter columns flanking two glass doors that open onto an attractive blue painted interior with two molded shelves, plate grooves and spoon slots for enhanced display. This section has been electrified but this has not been tested and is not guaranteed to work properly.

The lower section has reeded quarter columns, with three small drawers above two paneled doors opening onto a blue painted interior with shelving. The cupboard is supported by ogee bracket feet. It is in very good condition. The brasses have been replaced a the plate rails in the upper section are missing. Also, there are scattered repairs and the normal wear and tear from age and usage. Circa 1800, Pennsylvania.

Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Brooklyn Museum, gift from Estelle Rogers Hewlett, 1952.

Child's Sheraton Chest of Drawers

Child’s Sheraton Chest of Drawers, cherry and poplar. The chest sports three graduated dovetailed drawers, original brasses and an attractive old, and possibly original, finish. In addition to its original function as a child’s chest of drawers, it can also be used as a night stand or as an end table next to a sofa. The chest is on very good condition, save for some stains on the top. A very special, charming piece! Circa 1820-1840, Ohio or Pennsylvania.

Rare Early 18th Century Cupboard

Very rare early 18th century paneled cupboard, oak and walnut. The cupboard sports an excellent cornice, an open top shaped with ogee and cyma curves, a rosette carved into a small panel on each side of a paneled door, the door attached with butterfly hinges. The sides extend to the floor, forming the legs on which the cupboard stands. The cupboard is in very good condition. This is an opportunity to purchase a very early cupboard with a museum provenance. Circa 1725, Deerfield, Massachusetts.

Painted Wardrobe

Early painted wardrobe, pine and oak. The wardrobe sports original blue and rusty red paint, a bold cornice, a single paneled door on early rat-tail hinges flanked by fluted pilasters, and a molded base. The door opens onto an interior with a curved shelf above two rows of pegs. The wardrobe originally had no additional shelves but these could be added to convert the wardrobe to an entertainment center and/or for additional storage. The wardrobe is in very good condition with some wear and minor losses. The cornice and upper trim molding are likely well-done replacements. Late 18th or early 19th century, Pennsylvania.
