Pieced calico quilt. The quilt has the design of a nine-patch block alternating with a plain calico block, set on point. Two colors are used. One is a dark brown block print from circa 1790 and another 18th century block print with spindly floral vines on white. The back is a later circa 1840 print with a gray-blue/beige leafy design. The quilt is in good condition, with some brown dye loss in the early block print on the front and wear consistent with age and usage. Circa 1840, American.

The box sports a hinged lid with a centered pincushion top, with scattered shells and shell blossoms in each corner, a base decorated with rows and blossoms of shells and raised on four brass ball feet. The box is in good condition, with scattered loss of shells, mostly along the bottom margins. (Some loose shells included in the box.)  Late 19th century.

Needlework Sampler - Margaret Patterson

Margaret Patterson’s needlework sampler. The sampler is worked in multi-color silk threads on a linen ground. The top register consists of flower and leaf motifs above five alphameric rows above a row of various crowns and initials of family members. Below that are facing birds and trees above the maker’s name and date, “Margaret Patterson/Aged 8, 1810”. The bottom register has trees, a stylized flower and the initials, “ML” and “HL”, all within a Greek key border. The sampler is framed under glass in a birdseye maple frame. It is in good condition, with a few small holes and some staining. English.
