Pair of folk art portraits, gouache on paper, unsigned. These unusual portraits depict a gentleman carrying a top hat in one hand and a book in the other and a woman in a blue dress carrying a child, each shown in a pastoral landscape including a house in one portrait and a church in the other, and with the Hudson River in the background. The portraits are executed in the flat, stylized manner associated with the Hudson River Valley portrait tradition. They have lovely color and are in very good condition, with some minor toning and discoloration. Early 19th century, American.
