Tiger maple box. The box sports strong tiger maple striping, dovetailed construction and a chamfered lid with an inset brass plaque bearing the initials “P.S.F.S”, indicating that the box was associated with the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society. A tag attached to the underside of the lid states it was used as a safe deposit box. Founded in 1816, the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society was the first savings bank to organize and do business in the United States. The box is in very good condition, marred only by a tight shrinkage crack in the lid. Mid-19th century, Philadelphia.
