View of Lower New York from Brooklyn Heights, o/c, signed under the frame, “J. R. Ingham”. This is a finely painted view of lower Manhattan as seen from Brooklyn Heights, depicting sailboats and other marine activity on the East River, with the New York skyline in the distance. A plaque attached to the frame states that the painting was presented to Hendon Chubb on the 75th anniversary of the founding of Chubb and Son. Little is known about the artist, other than she exhibited at the National Gallery in 1872. The painting is in very good condition, having been professionally conserved, relined, with surface craquelure and some in-painting visible under UV light. Mid-19th century, New York.
