Portraits of a Man and Wife - Ammi Phillips

Portraits of a man and wife by Ammi Phillips, (1788-1865). The man is wearing a black jacket, white pleated shirt and a black stock with a large bow. He is holding a pamphlet entitled, “Minutes of the Baptist Missionary Convention”. His wife is wearing a multilayer embroidered and pleated bonnet with long ribbons, and a black dress with ballooned sleeves and a wide embroidered organdy collar. The paintings are both in good condition, unlined, with craquelure, stretcher marks and scattered areas of inpainting. They are presented in matching period gilt wood frames. Painted during Phillips’ “Kent Limner” period, the paintings date from circa 1829-1840, Kent, CT or Dover Plains, NY.
