Naive Portrait of a Woman - Ralph Curtis

250281K

Naïve portrait of a lady, oil on panel, attributed to Ralph D. Curtis, (1808-1885). The portrait depicts a seated woman with dark hair in ringlets around her face, wearing a green puffy sleeve dress and a shawl tied around her shoulders, sitting in front of a dark, blue-green background. It is framed in an ebonized frame. Although not signed, this portrait contains all the attributes of a Ralph Curtis portrait: oil on panel, dark background, thin oil pigments, and evidence of wooden braces on the back, (now removed.) It is in very good condition, with almost no in-painting visible when viewed under black light. Mid-19th century, New York.
