Figured maple tall chest of drawers. The chest features a dovetailed top, five graduated drawers, a beautifully carved apron and bracket feet. Incised on the inside of the third drawer is, ”Turn out Octr -13th-1790 in the Cadet Company for Stephen Williams”. The chest is in very good condition, with one minor drawer lip repair, a repair to one bracket foot and filled age splits on the sides. Late 18th century, probably Salem, MA.

Stephen Williams was born May 8, 1774, the son of Captain George Williams who was probably a member of the Cadet Company or had something to do with the arrangements for “the turnout”. It was an all-day affair with drill in the morning and a mock battle in the afternoon. (From a letter from Esther Usher, Ass’t Librarian, The Essex Institute, Salem, MA, dated March 16, 1949.
