English Lambing Chair

230165

English lambing chair, elm. This boxed armchair sports a scrolled crest, a roped seat covered with an upholstered pad, a drawer extending from one side and front turned legs with iron strapping. One hand-hold has a carved circular depression, perhaps to hold a candle. The chair has excellent color and patination. It is in very good condition with some loss to the wing back and wear commensurate with age.

The lambing chair was probably intended for use by the male head of household, and is also said to have been used by shepherds at lambing time. 18th century, English.
