Early lift-top blanket chest, hard pine. The chest sports a single drawer, a lid with a thumbnail edge, original brasses and lock parts, an inset molded board below the drawer, bootjack ends and an early reddish-brown finish. The box is surrounded by bullnose molding that drops down near the middle to frame the escutcheon for the lock, an unusual/rare design feature. The date “1766” is painted across the backboard. The chest is in very good condition considering its age. There is slight damage to the molding at the bottom right side of the box that is hard to notice and a few other minor repairs. The snipe hinges are original but one snipe has a replaced cotter pin. Circa 1776. New England.
