A matched set of four painted fan-back Windsor chairs. The chairs are in mustard paint over the original black and a later green. They are made of ash and hickory with pine seats. The chairs sport well-carved ears, nicely shaped saddle seats and bold turned and splayed legs with “H” stretchers. They are in very good condition, with no replaced parts or spliced legs. A matched set of four Windsor chairs is very hard to find in today’s market. Circa 1780-1800, Massachusetts origin.
The chairs were appraised by Ed Weissman Antiques in 2004 for $10,800. A similar example of this style of Windsor chair, also with later mustard paint, appears in “The Windsor Style in America”, Volumes I and II, by Charles Santore, p33, Plate VIII.
Dimensions: 17.5” - 18" seat height, 35” - 36" overall height.
