She is holding a book and spectacles in one hand, signifying that she is a learned woman who is able to read. The woman is sitting on a painted Hitchcock chair, with curtains and tassels in the background. The painting is in very good condition, not relined and with only minor in-painting. Circa 1830-1840, Boston area.
