Naïve portrait of a mother and child, o/c, unsigned. Inscribed on verso: "Portrait of Stphen's (sic) /Great-Grand-Mother/ Jerusha Baker + child Elizabeth/Nantucket, Mass," and "Louise S. Baker/ April 4, 1877," (Jerusha Baker, was born in 1814 and died in 1885.)
The painting is in very good condition, having been professionally conserved and relined. Examination under black light reveals a small amount of inpainting, mostly in the background. Circa 1840, American School.
Jerusha Crowell married Captain Arvin Baker, (1804-1879), in Yarmouth, MA. Their first child, Franklin T. Baker was born on Nantucket later that year. The couple resided on Orange Street and Captain Baker commanded several vessels from Nantucket and ran a packet from Nantucket to Boston. The Bakers had seven children.
