Pair of Portraits in the Manner of Belknap

230026

Folk art portraits of a gentleman and his wife in the manner of Zedekiah Belknap, (1781-1858), o/c, unsigned. The man is wearing a black suit and a black stock tie. The red ground typical of Belknap is visible throughout, especially in the face. The woman is wearing a bonnet with floral decorations and a lace ruff with a gold flower pin. The subjects are identified as Willard Kneeland, (1805-1875), and Cleora Woods Kneeland, (1810-1891), of VT/NH. The couple married in Barnet, VT in 1831.

The paintings are in overall good condition, with craquelure and some paint loss, and have been relined with some in-painting. They are housed in 20th century gilt wood frames. A printed tag taped to the back of the woman's portrait reads, "Cleora Woods Kneeland/ 1810-1891/ m. Willard Kneeland/ 1831-". An old Boston framing label is attached to the back of both portraits.
