An exceptionally large oval pewter platter. The platter has stamped touch marks on the bottom that are nearly worn away. One can be read only as “Supe..”, undoubtedly for “Super Fine/Hard Metal”. This mark was used by English pewterers to indicate the hardness of the alloy used. Above that mark is an “X” with a crown above it. This mark came into use in the late 17th century as an indication of quality.A third touch mark, in the shape of a fan, has not been identified.18th Century, English.
