Folk Art Painting of a Farm Scene


Naïve farm scene, “Sheep and Cattle on the Road”, oil on canvas, signed “W.O. Bemis, 1863”. The painting features cows and sheep being herded by men on horses, along with a hay wagon with children riding on top. A storm appears to be approaching in the distance. The painting is in very good condition, with craquelure and a small spot of inpainting along the lower edge.

William Otis Bemis, (1819-1883), was born and lived in Spencer, MA. He was known for his paintings of cattle in a landscape. His work is displayed in the Worcester Art Museum.
