Country Chippendale tilt-top chess table. The top of this unusual table has a checkered arrangement of 32 samurai crests rendered in gouache and gold pigment on individual squares of paper. These alternate with as many squares decorated with rings to create the playing surface. The arrangement of squares is bordered by a red and blue printed border. The entire design is enclosed in a wooden frame under glass. The top tilts on a baluster standard that sits on four scrolled legs. The table is in very good condition. 19th century.
