Buttocks Basket - Shelton Sisters


Woven splint buttocks egg basket. The basket sports a single arched handle with wooden peg fastenings and has an old dry green painted surface. It is attributed to the Shelton Sisters from Forsythe County, NC. Mary Shelton, (1837-1921), and Eliza Shelton, (1845-1933), were renowned among southern basket makers. Their baskets are characterized by finely woven oak splints and bentwood frames.  This basket is in very good condition, with some scattered broken splints, especially at the handles and some discoloration to the bottom. Late 19th or early 20th century, North Carolina.
