An endearing naïve portrait of a young child petting a dog.
The medium is oil on linen. The painting is unsigned, in a period gold leaf frame. “Age 5, Nov. 1837” is written in script on the reverse side. The portrait is in excellent condition with only minor restoration. Vermont origin.
This portrait is attributed to Aaron Dean Fletcher, (1817-1902), a self-taught itinerant painter who began his career in Springfield, VT from about 1835 to 1839. See “The Magazine Antiques”, Jan. 1979, pp 184-193.
