Rare and very early Dower chest. The chest has three architectural panels with original paint decoration, including tulips and stars. The center panel also contains the initials “EB” and “FH”. The chest also has early moldings and original hand-wrought iron hardware, including the escutcheon, the grab lock, the handles and the large strap hinges that extend outside the back and end in well-defined tulips inside the back. Circa 1760, Pennsylvania.
Similar chests are on display at the Smithsonian and at Winterthur, with similar lettering, brushwork and design, and the Gothic middle arch, suggesting these chests were all made by the same hand.
