An early portrait of a woman, oil on canvas, unsigned.
An unusual feature is the inscription painted in bold white paint on the back of the canvas: “Mr John Atherton’s Lady”. The word “Lady” is a middle English term meaning “wife” or “the woman who runs the house”.
This portrait dates from the mid-18thCentury and is probably English. The condition is excellent. It has not been relined and has only some minor inpainting.
Dimensions: 31” wide x 36” high.
